Precision Machining Since 1985

We provide precision machining of industrial parts and equipment
from our state-of-the-art facility in Portland, Oregon.

Precision Machining in Manufacturing and Repairs

Since 1985, Western Machine Works has been providing precision machining to meet dimensional requirements up to .0005” accuracy, including very tight tolerances, finishes, outer diameter (OD), total indicator reading, and inside diameter (ID). An engineer is assigned to every project to ensure reliability of results from start to finish. Our precision machining has met stringent specifications and certifications for both federal and commercial customers with critical and demanding applications.

What is Precision Machining?

Precision machining is the process of removing material from a raw product to design and manufacture a final product used in very critical industries where no room for error is expected. Another use of precision machining is restoring critical dimensions and repairing worn-out parts for industrial equipment to withstand very demanding operating and environmental conditions. In both applications, Western Machine Works utilizes a high level of quality in tooling, machinery, machinist, and engineering to meet customers’ requirements no matter how complex or exacting they may be.

Precision Machining Services

Our experienced team of engineers and machinists specialize in fabricating, machining, and manufacturing large industrial equipment with very tight tolerances and exacting parameters.

Our precision machining services include:

  • Manufacturing precision and complex components, including process rolls, shafts, bearing housings, bushings, liners, propulsion hubs, turbine runner parts with equal or improved performance compared to the original parts.
  • Boring, milling, cutting, grinding, and restoration of critical fits and dimensions with up to .0005” accuracy.
  • Custom Fabrication with or without OEM prints.
  • Bearing fit restoration and surface protection using a thermal spray process compliant with OEM specifications.
  • Custom tooling and fabricating fixtures for complex setup.
  • Precision Roll Grinding and Dynamic Balancing.

Precision Machining Capabilities & Equipment

Precision-machining-engine-lathes

LARGE
Engine Lathes

Used for precision machining, cutting, and shaping various materials, while rotating the workpiece about an axis. Our engine lathes can handle large critical components such as turbine runner shafts, wind turbine shafts, ship shafts, suction rolls, process rolls, large industrial drums, augers, screws, and cylinders.

  • Max. swing diameter: 78 ¾”
  • Max. between centers: 482”
  • Max. over cross slide: 66 1/2”

Vertical Boring
machines

Vertical boring machines are used for turning and boring large and heavy industrial workpieces, such as water turbine runners, propulsion hubs, marine pipe sockets, thrust bearings, and trunnions. The workpiece is held on a horizontal table that rotates along a vertical axis, while the boring head moves linearly.

  • Max. swing diameter: 103”
  • Max. vertical under rail: 85”

Horizontal Boring
machine

High precision equipment used to modify industrial parts and components by drilling, boring, milling, and grooving various types of steel and alloys in a horizontal direction. This allows for large parts to be machined quickly with great accuracy, while our machinists can reach small cavities easily.

  • 103” cross table travel
  • 60” x 120” table
  • 72” vertical travel
