LARGE
Engine Lathes

Our engine lathes are used for cutting, shaping, and precision machining of metallic materials, rotating the workpiece around an axis. Our lathes are capable of handling large equipment components and workpieces such as turbine runner shafts, propulsion shafts for marine vessels, wind turbine shafts, process rolls, large industrial drums, screws, augers, and cylinders.

  • Max. swing diameter: 78 ¾”
  • Max. between centers: 482”
  • Max. over cross slide: 66 ½”

CNC Lathe Machining

Our state-of-the-art CNC lathe allows us to create or restore industrial components and part to OEM specifications or better. These custom parts include:

  • Shafts
  • Process rolls
  • Bearing housings
  • Bushings and flanges
  • Custom tooling

Our CNC Lathe specifications:

  • 13 ¼” Swing Over Carriage x 78”

Vertical Boring
machines

Vertical boring machines are used for turning and boring large and heavy industrial workpieces, such as water turbine runners, propulsion hubs, marine pipe sockets, thrust bearings, and trunnions. The workpiece is held on a horizontal table that rotates along a vertical axis, while the boring head moves linearly.

  • Max. swing diameter: 103”
  • Max. vertical under rail: 85”

Horizontal Boring
machine

Our horizontal boring machine can modify industrial parts and components by drilling, boring, milling, and grooving various types of steel and alloys in a horizontal direction. This allows for large parts to be machined quickly with great precision and accuracy, while our machinists can reach small cavities easily.

  • 103” cross table travel
  • 60” x 120” table
  • 72” vertical travel

Precision Grinding Machines

Precision grinding and precision roll grinding in used in various industrial applications like hydropower, wind power, pulp & paper, heavy equipment, and marine. Western Machine Works can grind up to 4 Ra finish or regroove to precise dimensions to meet critical applications of rolls, screws, presses, augers, and other large rotating components.

Our Precision Grinding Machine

  • 48” OD x 290: Face
  • 4 Belt Grinder
  • Computer-controlled Crowns
  • 8” Superfinisher
  • Pro-Mic System
precision-machining-balancing-machine

Dynamic & Static Balancing Machine

Roll balancing helps minimize vibrations and preserve bearings in moving parts of machinery, especially rotating shafts. Industrial equipment must be balanced using counterweights and precise measurements. Dynamic and static balancing helps extend the life of equipment, increases equipment performance, and prevents expensive repairs later.

  • 96” Swing x 552” Length
  • 3-Plane Capacity
  • 50 HP Drive
Reverse engineering

Reverse Engineering

We can reverse engineer required components, even without an existing CAD file. We can design new equipment or upgrade existing components and machinery to strict tolerances and required standards. We also provide mechanical engineering services such as failure analysis, component redesign, industrial equipment upgrades, and project management services.

shaft-manufacturing-certified

Shaft Manufacturing

We provide comprehensive shaft manufacturing that meets or exceeds OEM standards, meets tight tolerances, with a fast turnaround time. No matter the complexity of the requirements, our experienced engineering and manufacturing team can produce shafts for the largest industrial applications.

Thermal Spray coating

Thermal Spray / Metallizing

Using a twin-wire arc thermal spray process, our technicians can restore your equipment to OEM specs or better. Stainless steel, tungsten carbide, and traction coatings available. We restore and recondition eligible equipment for a fraction of the price of replacement. Our thermal spray coating process meets ASTM standards, including ASTM 633-01(2008) and ASTM G98.
