High-Precision Machining – Propeller Blades

Four propeller blades for a newly built commercial tugboat required high precision machining prior to installation. Our team finish machined the bores per OEM dimensions and within the expedited timeline.

Project:

  • Part: Propeller Blades (4x)
  • Details: 90″ dia.
  • Customer: Marine Engine Parts and Service Provider

Challenges:

  • Critical timeline – fast turnaround time required.
  • High-precision machining required to correct the bore dimensions. Existing tapered bore was incorrect and had to be re-machined to match the shaft taper.  Very little machining stock was available so precision set up and machine work was required.

Engineered Solutions:

  • Set up the blades in VTL.
  • Adjust VTL ram to match bore taper.
  • Machine existing bore to the finished dimension per OEM specifications and print.
  • Install bore plug which must have 80% contact with ID surface.
  • Record all final dimensions and taper.
  • Quality inspection with documentation photos before shipping.
  • Prep for shipping.
  • Transportation to and from drydock site.

Results:

  • All technical specifications were achieved.
  • Propeller blades (4x) were completed and delivered within the installation schedule.
